As tequila continues to dominate shelf space, US-based barrel ownership company Barrel Global just announced a partnership with El Mexicano Tequila to offer añejo and extra añejo private barrels.

Beginning immediately, Barrel Global will offer a limited-edition collection of 200-liter barrels filled with 100% Blue Weber Agave Tequila for purchase through its online portal at www.barrelglobal.com, the company states. Price available upon request.

“Due to the incredible popularity of Mexican spirits, it made sense that our business model evolved from solely offering whiskey barrels to also offering beautifully aged añejo and extra añejo tequila,” said Barrel Global founder George Koutsakis in a news release. “We believe there is a robust market for private barrel offerings of the highest-quality, additive free tequila, which is coming from one of the most notable distilleries in Jalisco – El Mexicano.”

How Barrel Global Works

Through the online portal, consumers schedule an intake call with a representative from the company’s experts to request a barrel reservation, according to Barrel Global. Like other private barrel programs, consumers may request samples from various barrels and distilleries. Upon payment, legal certification is issued to the buyer conveying full barrel rights to the purchaser. During the maturation process, barrels are stored in a secure warehouse in Jalisco at the El Mexicano distillery at an annual cost of $100 per year, per barrel.

At the bottling stage, Barrel Global facilitates the design, packaging and legally compliant shipping of bottles, the company states. To retain the Denomination of Origin for Tequila, the barrels are bottled in Mexico and exported to the U.S. For buyers looking to sell bottles commercially, Barrel Global helps with obtaining a COLA (certification/exemption of label/bottle approval) and complying with the three tier system. Additionally, at any point of barrel ownership, the customer may resell the barrel to another interested party.

Later this year, Barrel Global founder George Koutsakis will roll out a new companion service to Barrel Global called InBarrel, allowing consumers to customize and personalize their very own bespoke brand of tequila, according to the company.
