Sugarfield Spirits, producers of “Agricole-style” cane juice and molasses-based rum, has introduced a new Port Finished Single Barrel rum.
Sugarfield Spirits Port Finished Single Barrel Rum is made from a blend of raw cane sugar and black strap molasses, the distillery states. All of the sugar and molasses come from Belle Rose, LA. The raw cane sugar and black strap molasses are combined with water and yeast and then fermented. The fermented product is distilled and then aged in a variety of barrels including new charred oak, used bourbon, barrels previously used to age Port wine, and other barrels.
The resulting rum has features aromas of sugar, with dark cherries, plums, vanilla, pepper and spiciness from the French oak on the palate, according to the distillery. It comes in at 55.5% ABV or 111 proof.

Sugarfield Spirits is expanding the availability of its rums, liqueurs and vodka with a new online ordering platform powered by Big Thirst, with fulfillment provided by a network of retailer partners to ship to consumers in 40 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. In person, Sugarfield Spirits offerings are available at retail and grocery stores in Louisiana, as well as at the distillery in Gonzales.
“I got the idea to start Sugarfield Spirits during a visit to a family-owned distillery in Oregon devoted to bottling an expression of Pacific Northwest fruit,” said Thomas Soltau, founder of Sugarfield Spirits, in a news release. “My background in chemistry and as a neonatologist equipped me with the skills to test how to use local fruits to make delicious spirits. We are focusing on rum in Louisiana as it is made with one of the largest products grown in the area. We are blessed with an abundance of sugarcane products from raw cane juice to raw cane sugar to blackstrap molasses.”
